2nd World Humanoid Robot Games open in Beijing with 2,056 robots

The 2nd World Humanoid Robot Games opened in Beijing on Saturday, August 22, 2026. Anadolu Agency carried the CGTN count: 666 teams, 2,056 robots, and 16 countries for a five-day meet at the National Speed Skating Oval (the Ice Ribbon). Xinhua says the Saturday evening ceremony put about 1,000 humanoids on the floor.

This is a sports-and-work showcase, not a consumer launch. The home-robot angle is the scenario slate: organizers moved household, hotel, and factory tasks out of mock sets and into model homes, hotels, and real workplaces.

China Daily reported the August 13 press conference. Teams are up 138 percent from 2025. Robot entries have doubled. China accounts for 641 teams and 1,975 robots, from 157 companies plus 200 universities and research institutes. Brazil is sending a national team.

The 2025 inaugural meet ran three days with six sessions, 280 teams, and a little over 500 robots, per Xinhua and Anadolu Agency.

Sports hall, then the house

New high-load sports this year include long jump, weightlifting, tug-of-war, and table tennis. Martial arts and dance are also on the card. Organizers say robots will often compete in pairs or groups of four, not only as solo acts.

The more useful signal for HomeBotRadar readers is the work block. Scenario events now cover family services, hotel guest work, supermarket retail, industrial assembly, logistics, and firefighting. Xinhua says those runs happen in real settings, not only simulated halls. That is closer to a home test than a 100-meter dash, even if the "home" is still a staged model apartment.

The Unitree speed claim

Anadolu Agency also notes a Unitree humanoid that reportedly hit 12.66 m/s (about 28.3 mph), a tick above Usain Bolt's peak of 12.42 m/s in his 2009 100-meter record. That figure is a company sprint demo for a research platform Unitree has been calling Superman. It is not a verified Games result, and it is not the shipping Unitree G1.

Treat 12.66 m/s as an unverified peak until independent timing lands. Catalog G1 still lists about 7 km/h. Different machine, different job.

What we do not know yet

The opening recap does not name winners, home SKUs, or retail prices. We also do not have a public start list that maps every household-scenario entry to a product you can order. Autonomy versus teleoperation will vary by event. Forbes and other previews have flagged that gap. Wait for results, not the parade.
