UnitreeUnitree G1 variant Pemba summits Chimborazo after a 16-hour push
Modified G1 Pemba reached Ecuador's Chimborazo summit in a 16-hour field test, but steep sections still needed a human carry.

Pemba, a modified Unitree G1, reached the summit of Chimborazo in Ecuador after a 16-hour push to about 20,341 ft (6,200 m). That altitude, cold, snow, thin air, and weak comms are a harder test than a trade-show floor. Still, the climb was not fully autonomous. On steeper pitches the team carried the robot. Treat this as a harsh field trial, not a solo mountaineering win.
What the team reported
- Robot: Pemba, built on a modified Unitree G1 platform
- Route: Chimborazo volcano, Ecuador, one of the highest peaks in the Andes
- Duration: about 16 hours for the summit attempt
- Independent walking: on sections where slope stayed under ~30°
- Human assist: crew carried Pemba on steeper, technical passages
- Stress factors: cold, snow, low oxygen, patchy comms, and battery load at altitude
The useful signal is environmental: how joints, balance, and power hold up when the demo hall is gone. The limit is autonomy: when the grade gets real, humans still had to step in.
Everest next, permits unclear
Reports say Everest is the next target. Planned checks include battery performance, joint durability, gait on uneven terrain, and behavior in extreme cold between base camps and higher camps.
That plan may stall on paperwork. Nepal reportedly has no clear rules yet for robotic expeditions on Everest, and officials are said to be drafting guidance for non-human climbing teams. Until permits exist, the Everest leg stays a headline, not a scheduled test.
What this means for HomeBotRadar
Pemba is not a separate catalog robot. We still score Unitree G1 on the public G1 spec sheet and buyer channels. This story does not change our home readiness or reality scores.
The home-market read is indirect: G1 hardware is tough enough for altitude stress tests, but no verified home task benchmark came out of Chimborazo. Pre-order G1 buyers should not expect volcano-grade autonomy in the living room.
We are not updating G1 scores on this news alone. We will revisit metadata if Unitree publishes official endurance data tied to a production G1 SKU or a named variant buyers can order.
